EPCOS, a brand of TDK Corporation, has announced the release of a new series of high-temperature aluminum electrolytic capacitors designed specifically for the demanding requirements of automotive and industrial applications. The new series extends operational capability up to +125°C while maintaining enhanced performance and extended operational life.
Enhanced Performance at Extreme Temperatures
The new high-temperature series addresses the growing demand for components capable of operating reliably in harsh environments. These capacitors utilize an improved electrolyte formulation and enhanced electrode materials that provide superior stability at elevated temperatures compared to standard devices.
Key improvements include a 2-fold increase in operational life when operated at +125°C compared to previous generations. The new series maintains stable capacitance and ESR values over the extended temperature range, ensuring consistent performance throughout the component's operational life.
Applications in Automotive and Industrial Markets
The new series is particularly well-suited for applications in automotive powertrains, where components must operate reliably under the hood with temperatures reaching +125°C. Additionally, the series meets the requirements for industrial applications including motor drives, renewable energy systems, and power supplies where elevated ambient temperatures are common.
Available in standard case sizes from 10mm to 35mm in diameter, the series offers capacitance values from 330µF to 8200µF at voltage ratings from 16V to 450V. The series maintains the AEC-Q200 qualification for automotive applications and meets IEC standards for industrial use.
Technical Specifications
The new high-temperature series features:
- Rated temperature: -40°C to +125°C
- Life expectancy: 2000 hours at rated temperature and voltage
- Ripple current: Up to 3.9A (for largest case sizes)
- Capacitance tolerance: ±20%
- Mounting: Radial lead or screw terminal
The series also incorporates an improved can design that provides enhanced pressure relief characteristics, increasing safety in over-temperature conditions.
Market Impact
This release addresses the growing need for reliable passive components in electrified transportation and heavy industrial applications. As automotive manufacturers continue to electrify powertrains and increase power density, components capable of operating at extended temperatures become critical for system reliability.
The new series enables designers to reduce system complexity by eliminating the need for additional thermal management for capacitor elements while ensuring long-term reliability in harsh environments.
